Many of us were surprised by what has been happening in Catalonia but we must prepare ourselves for another type of decentralization that is coming on a planetary scale. An inexorable decentralization will follow a disintermediation which is primarily economic but capable of causing profound socio-political changes. Due to the impact of blockchain technology, only a scenario of intolerable political repression will prevent the natural dismemberment of many world’s reference institutions. By using a series of technological innovations, individuals and communities will be able to organize themselves without recourse to centralized organizations. Thus, compared to the tsunami of decentralization that can be formed by the collapse of traditional institutions, the pro-independence agitation in Catalonia will resemble a temporary foam in a global ocean circumnavigated by peers that will work collectively to avoid future collisions with institutional wrecks and regulatory boulders.
